The Design Paradox
Webflow's homepage is visually stunning and informationally thin. A first-time visitor who doesn't already know what Webflow does cannot determine it from the hero section.
"The modern web is visual" is a philosophy, not a value proposition. "Build professional websites without writing code" is what they mean — and they don't say it until the second scroll.
Revenue Leak #1 — Clarity Score of 9/20
The headline fails the three-question test.
- Is this relevant to me? Unknown — "modern web" could mean anything.
- Do I understand what this does? No — "visual" says nothing about the deliverable.
- What do I do next? Two CTAs of equal visual weight ("Get started free" and "Get a demo") split attention instead of directing it.
The visitor must make a decision before they understand what they're deciding about.
Revenue Leak #2 — Cognitive Load Score of 8/20
The page presents four distinct product surfaces — Designer, CMS, Hosting, Ecommerce — within the first two scrolls, each with its own value proposition. A visitor who came looking for a website builder is now evaluating a platform suite. Having to understand the product architecture before knowing whether it solves their problem causes early exit.
Revenue Leak #3 — The Feature Wall
Below the hero, Webflow shows a showcase of customer sites before explaining what the product does. Social proof is powerful — but social proof before comprehension is noise. The visitor sees beautiful websites without understanding whether Webflow can make one like theirs.
What Webflow Gets Right
Trust signals are exceptional. Named enterprise customers, case study metrics, and an "awarded by" section establish legitimacy immediately. The form itself — email only for free signup — is a conversion best practice. These scores pull the overall above 50 despite the clarity failures.
The Highest-Leverage Fix
Replace the hero headline with: "Build any website, visually. No code required." Test it. This answers all three clarity questions in one sentence. Everything downstream improves when the visitor understands the product in the first five seconds.
