Friction is the silent tax on every conversion funnel. Unlike clarity or trust — which visitors consciously evaluate — friction operates below awareness. Visitors don't think "this form is too long." They simply leave. The absence of a complaint is not the absence of a problem.
Why Friction Audits Matter
Every additional step, field, click, or second of load time between a visitor's decision to convert and their completed conversion reduces completion rate. The relationship is not linear — it's exponential. The first unnecessary field costs 3–5%. The fourth costs 12–18%. By the sixth, you've lost a third of the visitors who intended to convert.
The 12-Point Checklist
- Page load time. Every second above 2s costs 7–12% of conversions.
- Form field count. Each field beyond 3 adds measurable drop-off.
- CTA visibility. Is the primary CTA visible without scrolling on mobile?
- Navigation distractions. Does the nav offer escape routes before conversion?
- Multi-step forms. Are progress indicators present? Is step count disclosed?
- Password requirements. Are requirements shown before or after failed attempts?
- Error messages. Do they explain what's wrong and how to fix it?
- Mobile tap targets. Are buttons at least 44×44px with adequate spacing?
- External links. Does clicking trust badges or logos open new tabs mid-funnel?
- Captcha placement. Is it blocking conversions from legitimate users?
- Payment options. Are you requiring account creation before purchase?
- Confirmation clarity. Does the user know what happens after they click?
Applying the Checklist
Score each point 0–2: 0 = significant friction, 1 = minor friction, 2 = no friction. A page scoring below 16/24 has structural friction problems that are measurably suppressing conversion rate. Fix the zeros first — they represent the highest-leverage interventions available.
