The question of whether AI can write landing page copy that converts as well as human copywriters is asked frequently and answered poorly — usually by people with a financial interest in one answer or the other. We ran a structured comparison across 14 landing pages to find out.
The Test Structure
For each page, we generated a complete copy set using AI (headline, subheadline, value propositions, CTA copy, trust language) and compared it against the existing human-written copy. Both variants ran as A/B tests with minimum 2,000 sessions per variant and 95% confidence threshold.
The Results
- AI won on 5 pages — primarily pages where the original copy was unclear or jargon-heavy. AI's tendency toward simplicity was an advantage.
- Human won on 6 pages — primarily pages where the audience was sophisticated and the offer was nuanced. Human copy captured specificity that AI generalized away.
- No significant difference on 3 pages — the copy was not the binding constraint on conversion.
The Nuanced Conclusion
AI-generated copy is a strong first draft and occasionally a strong final draft. It excels at clarity and structure. It struggles with audience-specific voice, competitive differentiation, and the kind of specificity that makes B2B copy feel like it was written by someone who understands your industry.
The optimal workflow is not AI vs. human. It's AI-generated structure refined by human specificity. The Protocol Generator is built on this principle: AI produces the conversion architecture, and you refine the voice.
